The Meaning of Peace

When the word peace is mentioned the definition that comes in mind is tranquility, a state where everything is calm and no problems are present. Peace is related to other "supernatural" definitions, for example heaven; or even a church and to some people their own home. One other meaning for the word is when there is no war.
A generation of people that their lives revolved around peace were the hippies, the movement which started in the 60's. The life style they lived was peace orientated, and were strongly against the war; they successfully tried to spread those feelings around America.
Religion can play another major role with the meaning of peace; many of the main ideas of religion revolve around peace, and the spreading of it to all the people in the world. As well as eternal peace; once a person passes away they will go to an eternal peaceful afterlife.
A main stream logo for peace is the circle, with a "Y" in the middle, which is also know as the peace sign. The word peace has different meaning to every person, and everyone interprets the word in their own different ways.

  1. PDutchover, I agree with the way you think about peace. It is a very powerful word, but yet extremely calm with no worries about violence. Creating peace is great, live and learn to love, respect and at least we can try on growing peace in our community! =)

  2. Try to think more thoroughly, wasnt the Christian Church one of the most violent and criminal organizations at the Inquisition time, weren't they the ones who started war during the Cruzades? And not only the Christians, but also the Middle Eastern religions, such as the Islam and Muslims that are in a never ending war for a piece of desert, where they think their Messiah was born?

  4. I like how you addressed peace as a supernatural concept. I agree that peace is thing that is almost non existent and supernatural is a really good word to describe that.

  5. I don't think that the hippies lived in peace I think they lived in a "no care" attitude that caused them many problems. I agree in what you think that peace is just calm or even heaven.

  6. It is amazing how one word can mean paint so many different pictures, but one thing it doesn’t create is hate. Just think of the word peace can wipe out any other thoughts of aggression, even if it is for a small period of time. I agree that religion brings peace to many people, but religions are also flipped at times to justify violence. Religion is often manipulated to serve a righteous cause of war.

  7. I agree with you with what you think when you hear the word peace. I also think of something quiet and calm. I believe in God and I also think that peace should be like heaven, with what my parents and techers have teached me. Some people also think about the hippies, but I actually don't think about that when I hear the word peace. I think of a quiet place and also about a beach which has a really nice a peaceful scene.

  9. I like and agree with you when you say that everyone interprets the word peace in thier own ways, and it's true. Not everyone sees peace as the same way as another. I like how you also say that the word peace is tranquility, that no problems are present. That is how I also think of the word when I hear it.

  10. Peace is always in the reach of us. I agree that the exact definition of peace has changed over the years, but its benefit remains the same.
